Friends, as you may know our son, brother, grandchild, nephew, cousin, friend, and inspiration Jon Ullrich passed away much too soon in 1997 at the age of fourteen. Despite his ongoing medical challenges Jon was always a symbol of courage and enthusiasm. As you would expect of a child he really liked to have fun!
As Jon had such a profound positive impact on our family and everyone he touched we decided to create a charitable trust, Friends of Jon. The mission of Friends of Jon is to provide assistance to non-profit organizations that provide services for mentally and/or physically challenged children and adults in loving memory of Jon Ullrich.
Over the years the funds raised by Friends of Jon have supported the following important programs:
1999- BOCES Carmen Road School for the multiply handicapped.
2000- United Cerebral Palsy, which Jon attended for five years, to upgrade their learning center's media facility.
2001- Gift of Life, Inc. providing open heart surgery to needy children throughout the world.
2002- Variety Child Learning Center serving children with learning, language, and behavior disabilities, and autism. 2003 - Cure Autism Now & NY Families for Autistic Children
2004- Ronald McDonald House Charities whose mission is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children.
2005 - St. Edward Confessor School to provide a handicap accessible renovation.
2006- Schneider Children's Hospital by working with parents, children, and their pediatricians, fulfilling a commitment to providing for the special needs of young patients...needs that differ significantly from those of adults.
2007- Let the Children Play improves the lives and dignity of children by creating Universally Accessible Playgrounds allowing children with disabilities to play side-by-side with their able-bodied peers.
2008- Worldwide Orphans Foundation transforms the lives of orphaned children around the world by taking them out of anonymity and helping them to become healthy, independent, productive members of the communities and the world.
2009- Dylan's Footprint Dylan Thompson is a teenager with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. A group of concerned parents, educators, politicans, builders and other caring individuals on Long Island have come together to raise funds to help make major renovations to Dylan's house to make it handicap accessible.
Keeping with the tradition of supporting efforts that help kids in need this year's recipient of the donations raised by Friends of Jon is:
Kids of Courage
Kids of Courage is a volunteer based not for profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and young adults with serious medical diagnoses. "Conquering Illness Through Adventure".
